Gender in UN Missions and beyond

This 90 minutes lecture for the United Nations Staff Officer Course (UNSOC) answers the following questions:

1. What does the term “gender” mean? And what are common misunderstandins?
2. Where does the topic come from?
The development of the policy framework of Women, Peace and Security (WPS)
3. Why it is relevant for any mission, whether military, humanitarian or political to consider gender?

 

Gender-Based violence

At the 2024 conference on “Survivor-centered justice for gender-based violence survivors” organized by JurFem, the National Police of Ukraine, and others, I spoke about the needs and challenges faced by victims of domestic violence and other forms of gender-based violence. I also highlighted possible steps that Ukrainian institutions and organizations could take to better address the needs of survivors of domestic violence and reduce their risks.

 

Sexual harassment

At the 2025 “Voices in Motion” event at the Academy of the Patrol Police of Ukraine, I spoke to cadets about the importance of addressing gender discrimination and sexual harassment within an institution.  

 

Conflict-Related Sexual violence

In the 3 hours session as part of the training “Gender Perspectives”, held by the Centre for Operative Communication of the German Armed Forces, I discuss the following topics:

  • Understanding CRSV, key terminology, and definitions

  • Legal and institutional frameworks (UN/NATO)

  • CRSV within a Protection of Civilians approach

  • The role of armed forces in preventing and responding to CRSV

 

Gender-responsive Peace

At the 2025 “A comprehensive approach to gender in operations” training, organized by the Peace Operations Training Centre in Slovenia, I spoke about gender-responsive peace operations and the role of Gender and Protection Advisers and Gender Focal Points.
